(Rac)-sn-Glycerol 3-phosphate is a phosphorylated derivative of glycerol and an intermediate in the glycolysis pathway. It is an α-site substrate analogue that strongly inhibits the reaction rate of indole and nucleophilic indole analogues with E(A-A) when bound to the α-site. This compound binds to the α subunit of tryptophan synthase, allosterically regulating tryptophan synthesis. It can also serve as a phosphorus, carbon, and energy source for microorganisms.
