Raxatrigine hydrochloride (GSK-1014802 hydrochloride) is a novel small molecule, state-dependent sodium channel blocker and a Nav1.7 sodium channel inhibitor. It has shown potential in treating cognitive symptoms of schizophrenia, as demonstrated by its ability to prevent deficits in reversal learning induced by PCP, similar to lamotrigine. However, higher doses were required for activity in this model compared to those needed for anticonvulsant efficacy, suggesting a potentially lower therapeutic window. Raxatrigine (GSK-1014802) was granted orphan-drug designation by the US Food and Drug Administration in July 2013.
