Cytoplasmic ribosomes, responsible for protein synthesis, consist of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit, made up of 4 RNA species and approximately 80 proteins. This gene encodes a ribosomal protein in the 60S subunit, belonging to the L7AE family. The protein can interact with nuclear hormone receptors, including the thyroid hormone receptor, inhibiting their DNA binding and transactivation. This gene is part of the surfeit gene cluster, which contains tightly linked genes with no sequence similarity. It is co-transcribed with small nucleolar RNA genes U24, U36a, U36b, and U36c in its introns. The gene rearranges with the trk proto-oncogene to form the chimeric oncogene trk-2h, which encodes an oncoprotein combining ribosomal protein L7a and the receptor tyrosine kinase domain of trk. As typical for ribosomal proteins, multiple processed pseudogenes exist for this gene in the genome.
