Solamargine (CAS 20311-51-7) is a steroidal alkaloid glycoside isolated from plants of the Solanaceae family such as Solanum nigrum In cellular studies Solamargine has demonstrated inhibitory effects on migration and invasion of hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) cells by downregulating both the expression and activity of matrix metalloproteinases MMP-2 and MMP-9 It also induces apoptosis and suppresses proliferation in multiple cancer cell lines including non-small cell lung cancer and melanoma via activation of caspase-3 modulation of cell cycle progression and inhibition of Stat3 phosphorylation through p38 MAPK signaling These findings support its use as a research tool in oncology and cell signaling studies
