Succinylsulfathiazole is a long-acting, orally active sulfonamide antibiotic with localized gut-specific antibacterial activity. It functions by inhibiting bacterial folate synthesis, which in turn reduces coliform counts and suppresses intestinal bacterial growth and vitamin biosynthesis. Additionally, it modulates hepatic mTOR signaling, decreases cecal fermentation, reduces hepatic folate levels, and diminishes the fermentability of certain dietary fibers.
