A microbial metabolite with antiviral and hepatoprotective activities; an inhibitor of HCV protease (IC50 = 0.9 UG/ml); reduces cytotoxicity in Vero cells infected with HSV-1 or HSV-2 (IC50s = 5.8 and 5.5 UG/ml, respectively); decreases viral plaque formation in Vero cells infected with HSV-1 or HSV-2 in a concentration-dependent manner; inhibits alcohol-induced increases in serum triglyceride levels and decreases in serum HDL levels in a mouse model of ALD at 200 mg/kg per day; also prevents alcohol-induced increases in hepatic lipid accumulation and the activity of serum ALT and AST, as well as decreases in the activity of MDA, SOD, and catalase and in the levels of GSH in isolated mouse liver in the same model
