α-Vitamin E ((+)-α-Tocopherol) is a naturally occurring, potent antioxidant and peroxyl radical scavenger. It maintains the integrity of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids in cell membranes. It inhibits PKC, leading to inhibition of platelet aggregation and modulation of nitric oxide and superoxide production. It also activates MAP kinase and PI3 kinase (PI3K) pathways and has proposed benefits for influenza virus A, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C infections.
