Piperine is an alkaloid isolated from pepper, which inhibits the activity of P-glycoprotein and CYP3A4. It has demonstrated in vitro cytotoxic activity and immunomodulatory, anti-oxidant, anti-asthmatic, anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcer, and anti-amoebic properties. It can enhance the bioavailability of other drugs.
