Distillation is a process used widely in the laboratory or in wider working environments for separating or purifying liquids or liquid mixtures based on the different boiling points of individual components.
Distillation Applications:
• Separation and purification of miscible liquid mixtures in organic chemistry
• Drying of solid residues and/or solvent removal
• Fractional distillation of liquids from polymers and petroleum products
• Removal of particulates or other solid contaminants
• As part of a water purification system for production of distilled water for laboratory use
• Specialist steam distillation-based applications such as Kjeldahl analysis of nitrogen and proteins in food, beverage, or environmental samples
What Types of Distillation Equipment Are Available?
Conventional distillation apparatus, typically comprising individual, jointed borosilicate glassware components assembled by the user (depending upon the application), using appropriate clamps, stands, and supports. Most conventional distillation assemblies combine a round-bottomed distilling flask to contain and heat the liquid(s) that require purification, fitted with a stoppered or jointed neck to which is attached a downward-sloping, inclined side-arm for connection to a condensing unit to cool the heated vapors back down to their liquid state. Heating mantles are the preferred heat source for improved temperature control. These conventional distillation units are also available supplied complete and ready-assembled for added convenience and ease of use.
Specialized automated distillation equipment, notably units designed for the determination of volatile acidity and alcoholic strength by volume in wines, musts, and alcoholic beverages, and units designed for Kjeldahl nitrogen or protein determinations.

Distilling Receiver, 50mL, Dean-Stark, Modified, 24/40 Joint Size, 4mm PTFE Stopcock, Approx. 355mm Height x 240mm Width. This innovative and compact Dean-Stark receiver is designed for azeotropic distillations using solvents that are heavier than water. The solvent vapor travels through tube “A” to a condenser inserted in the top standard taper outer joint. Vapors are condensed and collected in the reservoir section. The layers separate and the heavier than water solvent overflows through tube “C” back into the distillation flask. The upper water layer is drained out intermittently using the 4mm PTFE stopcock “D”. Capacity of the lower reservoir is approx. 50mL.

Bump Trap, 250mL, Rotary Evaporator, 24/40 Top Outer, 29/42 Lower Inner. Used between the vapor tube and evaporation flask on a rotary evaporator to prevent contents of the flask from being drawn into the condenser in the event of “bumping.” Traps have a 24/40 top outer joint and the listed size of lower inner joint.

Condensers with lower drip tip inner joints will protrude into the spherical section, permitting the distillate to fall directly into the receiving flasks. Distribution adapter has a serrated connection for attachment to vacuum source. Complete item supplied with distribution adapter, three flasks of the listed size and six stainless steel springs.

Distilling Receiver, 20mL, Moisture Test, Barrett, 24/40 Joint Size, 2mm Glass Stopcock, Approx. 325mm Height x 95mm Width. Barrett style distilling receiver used to determine the water content in petroleum or bituminous material. Receiver is made according to ASTM specifications, with the addition of the top outer standard taper joint and lower stopcock. The 2mL has sub-divisions of 0.02mL; the 5ml has subdivisions of 0.20mL; 10ml has subdivisions of 0.1mL; the 20mL has subdivisions of 0.2 from 0 to 3mL and 0.5 from 3 to 20mL. Available with glass or PTFE stopcocks.

Distilling Adapter, Double, 10° Angled Side Neck, 24/40 Joint, 6mm PTFE Stopcock, 1/2" Swagelok. Adapter is designed for use with flasks or reaction vessel lids that have a 10° angled side neck. Adapter has a lower inner joint and two top outer joints. Lower stopcock is a 6mm PTFE stopcock with a 1/2” or 3/4” OD distillate takeoff for use with a compression fitting and TFE tubing. PLEASE NOTE: ADAPTER CAN BE USED WITH COMPOUND ANGLED SIDE NECKS.

Pre-trap (B) is 51mm OD x 250mm long with 28/15 polished socket joints to connect the line shut off adapter (A) to the main trap stopper assembly (C) which has 28/15 o-ring ball joints. Trap assembly is designed to allow connection to either the right or left side of AF-0060 or AF-0061 manifolds. Sublimation Apparatus, 50mL, Complete. Two-piece sublimer consisting of an upper water cooled condenser and lower flat bottom flask. Sublimate is collected on the inner wall of the condenser. The two components are assembled by a grease-free o-ring seal which permits the components to be gently separated for maximum product recovery. When condenser is inverted, the top vacuum connection serves as a funnel for convenient product removal. Complete apparatus consists of a condenser, flask, Viton o-ring and CG-150 Stainless Steel clamp.

Unique one-piece distilling condenser is actually a 75º adapter, highly efficient coil condenser and vacuum adapter in a compact one-piece unit. Available with a choice of three sizes of condensers with uptake inner joint as listed. Top thermometer joint is a 10/30 outer for use with a 3in immersion CG-3506 thermometer. Receiver joint on all sizes is a 24/40 inner having a sealed-in drip tip.
