Bile Salts No. 3 is a mixture of bile salts for use in preparing microbiological culture media in a laboratory setting. Several media containing Bile Salts No. 3 are recommended in standard methods for multiple applications. Bile Salts No. 3 is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans.Bile Salts No. 3 is a refined bile salts mixture, comprising mainly sodium cholate and sodium desoxycholate. Its primary use is as a selective agent for the isolation of Gram-negative micro-organisms, inhibiting Gram-positive cocci. Bile Salts No. 3 is prepared especially for use in MacConkey Agar and Violet Red Bile Agar. Implicated vehicles of transmission included turkey frankfurters, coleslaw, pasteurized milk, Mexican style cheese, and pate. Maximum Recovery Diluent (Tryptone Salt Broth) is used as an isotonic diluent for maximum recovery of microorganisms and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. An osmotically controlled solution which is an alternative to, and a replacement for, 1/4 strength Ringer’s Tablets (NCM0191K). The presence of a low level of peptone lessens the physiological shock normally experienced by bacterial cells when they are introduced to a diluent such as Ringer’s Solution. The level of peptone is such that multiplication of the organisms is not possible in the time in which the sample will be present in the diluent (1-2 hours). Brilliant Green Agar w/ Sulfapyridine is used for the selective enrichment of Salmonella spp. in a laboratory setting. Brilliant Green Agar w/ Sulfapyridine is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans.Brilliant Green Agar was first described by Kristensen et al and later modified by Kauffmann. The outstanding selectivity of this medium permits the use of moderately heavy inocula evenly distributed over the surface.
