Epac (exchange protein directly activated by cAMP; also designated cAMP-GEFI) and Epac2 (also designated cAMP-GEFII) compose a novel family of cyclic AMP activated guanine-nucleotide exchange factors (GEFs). Both Epac and Epac2 contain cAMP-binding motifs and a motif common to Ras superfamily GEFs. Epac and Epac2 both function to activate Rap1, a Ras-like GTPase that is known to suppress the oncogenic transformation of cells by Ras. Epac is ubiquitously expressed, whereas Epac2 is primarily expressed in the brain and adrenal glands.

HSF2, as well as the related gene HSF1, encodes a protein that binds specifically to the heat-shock element and has homology to HSFs of other species. Heat shock transcription factors activate heat-shock response genes under conditions of heat or other stresses. Although the names HSF1 and HSF2 were chosen for historical reasons, these peptides should be referred to as heat-shock transcription factors.

Members of the Bcl-2 family of proteins interact to regulate programmed cell death (apoptosis). Various homodimers and heterodimers formed by proteins in this family either promote or inhibit apoptosis. Pro-apoptotic members of this family include Bax, Bcl-xS, Bad, Bak, NBK (Bik), BID, Hrk, Bok, Bim, NOXA, Diva and Bmf. Apoptotic inhibitors include Bcl-2, Bcl-xL, Bcl-x(beta), Bcl-x(gamma), Bcl-w, Mcl-1, Bag-1, A1 (Bfl-1), BAR and BI-1 (TEGT). Bok, or Bcl-2 related ovarian killer, induces apoptosis in cells, but is suppressed by anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 family proteins. BECN1 plays a significant role in autophagy. PUMA gene encodes two BH3 domain-containing proteins PUMA(alpha) and PUMA(beta), which have similar binding activities to Bcl-2, localize to the mitochondria to induce cytochrome c release and activate the rapid induction of programmed cell death.

GFP is a uniquely versatile biomarker and, encased into PODS® crystals, offers a simple way to visualize und localize PODS® crystals embedded in biomaterials, such as hydrogels and scaffolds, using fluorescence microscopy. PODS® GFP crystals can be excited at 488 nm and optimally detected at 510 nm, compatible with commonly available filter sets.
