beta-Glucosidase hydrolyzes carbohydrates by acting on terminal non-reducing b(1-4)-linked D-glucose residues with the release of D-glucose. beta-Glucosidases are required by organisms for the consumption of cellulose. Lysozyme a beta-glucosidase present in tears acts on the beta(1-4) glucose bonds present in the peptidoglycan cell wall of Gram-negative bacteria and helps to prevent bacterial infections in the eye. Defects in beta-glucosidase activity have been implicated in Gauchers disease and Parkinsons disease.

p53 is expressed in a wide variety of tissues and plays a major role in preventing tumour development. It is involved in cell cycle regulation functioning as a trans-activator to negatively regulate cell division by controlling a set of genes required for this process. It acts as a tumour suppressor in many tumour types by stimulating either apoptosis or growth arrest depending on the physiological circumstances and the cell type. Defects in p53 expression have been implicated in several diseases including choroid plexus papilloma lung cancer head/neck squamous cell carcinomas oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma Li-Fraumeni syndrome and hereditary adrenocortical carcinoma.
