Scissors
Hand-held instruments designed to cut thin materials, such as paper and cloth, consisting of two blades laid one on top of the other; products may be intended for use in specific applications such as cutting tissue or bone, dissections, etc.
Scissors are used in the laboratory to cut various materials. Some are for general use and others are designed specifically for tissue dissection or surgery.
Scissors are hand-operated tools that consist of a pair of metal blades with handles. The blades pivot to bring the sharpened edges in contact with each other, an action that cuts the material placed between the blades.
Scissors are selected based on specific features:
- Size or length: Blade length is key, as is the overall length of the scissors
- Shank-to-blade ratio: The length of the handles compared to the length of the cutting blade; the ratio helps determine the force needed to product a cut
- Type of handles: Straight, offset
- Material: Stainless steel is typically used for surgical scissors; some surgical scissors also have tungsten carbide cutting surfaces for hardness and durability
- Tips: Blade ends may be pointed, semi-blunt, or blunt (rounded)
- Blade shape: Straight, curved, or angled (bent); curved or angled blades may provide better access to areas with limited space

Our Vannas spring scissors are specialized spring scissors designed for precision cutting and often used by scientific researchers. They are named after the Swedish scientist Gunnar Vannas who invented them in the 1940s. Compared with other spring scissors, Vannas spring scissors are distinguished by their delicate, thin, sharp tips. The slender, pointed tips allows for precise cutting with minimal damage to surrounding tissues. Like all spring scissors, they are perfect for ambidextrous use and are often preferred by left-handed people. Manufactured with surgical grade stainless steel, these scissors are durable and resistant to corrosion. Our titanium scissors are lightweight and non-magnetic.

Ring-handled Dissecting Scissors are surgical scissors commonly used to cut and separate delicate tissues. These scissors are 10 or 12.5 cm long. These dissecting scissors are available with straight or curved blades. Our dissecting scissors are for general use in dissection, preparation of tissue samples, and small animal surgeries. Dissecting scissors have thinner (and often longer) blades than operating scissors. They are designed for cutting and probing in tight spaces. Their tips are pointed, where operating scissors are generally blunt. These are available in surgical grade stainless steel or premium German steel. Our Dissecting Scissors are designed to withstand the high heat and chemical exposure of the sterilization process. They may be autoclaved. To guarantee a long life for your surgical instruments, be sure to clean them thoroughly after each use.

Tungsten Carbide Mayo Scissors, also called Mayo Dissecting Scissors, are surgical scissors made popular by the Mayo Clinic. They have ring handles and long, straight, thick blades with semi-blunt tips that are straight or curved. The surgical scissors vary in length from 14 cm (5.5") to 17.5 cm (7"). Longer blades give you greater reach for deeper dissection. The blades are sturdy for heavy duty work like cutting connective tissues, fascia, and sutures. Mayo Scissors are often used for dissection, where the blunt tips prevent accidental damage to surrounding tissue and may be used to delicately probe. They may also be used for dressing and bandage removal.

Round handle spring scissors have a rounded, ergonomic handle design and a spring mechanism that allows for smooth, precise cutting action. The rounded handle design offers a comfortable and natural grip, reducing hand fatigue and improving control during use. This can be especially beneficial for long procedures that require a lot of cutting. The spring mechanism provides a smooth, precise cutting action, which reduces the risk of tissue damage or trauma. The 6.5mm curved blade is often used in ophthalmology to make precise incisions in the cornea or delicate tissues. The straight blades are more often used in microdissection, microsurgery or plastic surgery. These stainless steel spring scissors are durable and may be sterilized by chemical sterilant or autoclaving.

Olsen-Hegar Needle Holders with Suture Scissors are a dual purpose surgical instrument, combining the functions of a needle holder and surgical scissors into one instrument. This is ideal for suturing, because you can grasp the needle for stitching and use the integrated scissors for trimming the ends without reaching for a different surgical instrument. Streamline your suturing process and save time. Simultaneously, you can reduce the risk of dropping needles. Designed but the American surgeon Dr. George Olsen and gynecologist Dr. Douglas Hegar, the Olsen-Hegar needle holders are often used in orthopedics, plastic surgery, and any application requiring surturing. Life science researchers doing in vivo animal studies like implanting electrodes would also find this instrument useful. Researchers working with microinjection or microfluidics would also benefit from the dual use of this needle holder/scissors combination.

Tenotomy scissors are used for delicate procedures. With the long handle and thin tapered blades, the tenotomy scissors are able to cut tissues in hard to reach, limited spaces. These sharp, straight scissors make small, precision cuts, and they are perfect for delicate operations. The longer handles help to control the precision of these tenotomy scissors in restricted spaces or with delicate membranes or tissues, like brain tissue or ophthalmic surgeries. These scissors are designed for probing and cutting in tight spots. A precision pair of scissors like the tenotomy scissors limits the damage to surrounding tissues, which is critical in neurosurgery and other applications.
