Its aequorin complex generates luminescence intensity 15 times higher and has a faster response time to calcium compared to native coelenterazine.Coelenterazines are luminescent enzyme substrates for apoaequorin and Renilla luciferase. Apoaequorin is used as a calcium indicator. It binds coelenterazine to form an aequorin complex that emits light upon calcium binding and measures concentrations ~0.1 uM to >100 uM.
