It is an effective replacement for ozone depleting solvents like dibromodifluoromethane and tetrabromodifluoroethane. It is also utilized as a brominating reagent. In analytical chemistry, it is used in quantitative determination of perhalogenated compounds by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).
