Buffered Charcoal Yeast Extract Agar without L-Cysteine (BCYE w/o Cys) is a non-selective and non-differential medium. It is used in combination with BCYE Agar(s) containing L-cysteine HCl for the presumptive identification of Legionella species. L-cysteine HCl is a required growth factor. Ferric pyrophosphate and alpha-ketoglutarate provide additional nutritional requirements. Activated charcoal decomposes hydrogen peroxide, which is a toxic metabolic biproduct, while also collecting CO2 and modifying surface tension of the media. ACES buffer helps maintain the proper pH for optimal growth. Legionella spp. are inhibited on this formulation due to the absence of L-cysteine HCl. • Product meets CLSI, EPA, CDC, ISO, and SMWW reference methods and performance criteria.• BCYE w/o Cys should be used by trained professionals within a laboratory setting. • For in vitro diagnostic (IVD) use.• Product is not intended for use in the diagnosis or treatment of disease or other human conditions.
