2,2'-Dipyridyl disulfide is a useful reagent for the determination of sulfhydryl groups and a common reagent in peptide chemistry. It is often used in oxidation-reduction condensations to form peptide bonds or in coupling reactions to form disulfide-linked heterodimers. The formation of intramolecular S-S bonds can be dramatically accelerated by the addition of a 2,2'-Dipyridyl disulfide solution to an air-oxidized mixture of cysteine-containing peptides.
