When troubleshooting plunger seal failure be aware that several other factors could lead to premature failure of any seal, including solvent type, lack of solvent filtering, seal overheating due to plunger stroke, improper installation techniques, improper use of plunger seal washing, damaged plungers and seal deposits left on the plunger. Since all seals are susceptible to damage during installation it is always good laboratory practice to wet all the components that the seal comes in contact with. Wetting of the seal, head, and plunger is important for lubrication to reduce deforming the seal. When the plunger seal is replaced the plungers should also be inspected, cleaned or replaced, if necessary. In addition, the inline filter insert should be replaced due to seal deposits.
