3-Hydroxyoctanoic acid is a hydroxylated fatty acid found in the LPS of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and in methyl-branched poly(3-hydroxyalkanoate) (PHA) polymers produced by Pseudomonas oleophores. It acts as an agonist of the orphan receptor GPR109B, leading to an increase in intracellular calcium in human neutrophils that endogenously express GPR109B. This compound prevents lipolysis in human adipocytes and its plasma levels are elevated in response to a ketogenic diet and in human male runners after strenuous exercise. Additionally, plasma levels of 3-hydroxyoctanoic acid were observed to be increased 3.41-fold in a mouse model of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) following a high-glycemic diet.
