4-Ethylphenol is a volatile phenolic compound associated with off-odour in wine. It is a phenolic compound that can be synthesized by intestinal flora and is converted to 4-ethylphenyl sulfate by Lactobacillus plantarum.

  • Causes DNA damage and induces the formation of 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-oxodG) in calf thymus DNA under the presence of Cu (II).
  • Reduces oligodendrocyte maturation and myelination in brains.
  • Causes increased anxiety-like behavior in C57BL/6J mouse models.
  • Causes mortality during labor and in offspring in Sprague Dawley rat models.
  • Leads to some abnormal nursing behaviors in Sprague Dawley rat models.
