Hexetidine (NSC-17764) is an orally active antibacterial and antifungal agent with broad activity. It enhances fungal growth inhibition when combined with IPBC, improves plaque-inhibiting activities with zinc, and is effective on purulent wounds when used with ultrasound. It is a promising candidate for research in fungus-related diseases and soft tissue purulent-inflammatory conditions, though concentrations greater than 0.1% can cause oral ulceration.

  • Maintains strong inhibition of T. virens growth for 14 days when incorporated into alginate gel with IPBC.
  • Demonstrates similar kill rates for S. aureus and Ps. aeruginosa within 2 hours of contact.
  • Effective on purulent wounds in rats when combined with photoditazine.
  • Did not significantly potentiate the effect of IPBC combined with trifluoperazine (TFZ) against human rhabdomyosarcoma cell lines, suggesting combinatorial effects specific to fungi.
