It promotes vascular endothelial cell proliferation and migration, with gene disruption in mice causing abnormal embryonic vessel formation. Upregulated in many tumors, its expression correlates with tumor progression. High protein levels are seen in POEMS syndrome and associated with diabetes-related microvascular issues and atherosclerosis.
