It catalyzes an important step in carbohydrate metabolism, the reversible oxidative phosphorylation of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate with NAD and inorganic phosphate. The protein also has uracil DNA glycosylase activity in the nucleus and antimicrobial properties against E. coli, P. aeruginosa, and C. albicans. Additionally, similar proteins in mice have been linked to regulating mRNA stability, nitrosylating nuclear proteins, and acting as a transferrin receptor on macrophage surfaces. Many pseudogenes related to this gene exist in the human genome. Alternative splicing generates multiple transcript variants.
