StatLab Advanced Carbol Fuchsin - a 10-minute acid fast bacteria stain

  • It is used in the Ziehl-Neelsen stain, a differential stain, to detect acid-fast bacteria like Mycobacterium tuberculosis
  • Carbol Fuchsin is more soluble in the cells' wall lipids than in the acid alcohol, allowing the bacteria to retain the red color even after decolorization with acid alcohol
  • This staining method is crucial for differentiating acid-fast bacteria from non-acid-fast bacteria, which are easily decolorized
