Simmons Citrate Agar is a differential medium used to assess the ability of microorganisms to utilize citrate as their sole carbon source. The 500g package is ideal for medium-scale microbiological testing and biochemical analysis. The medium contains sodium citrate as the only carbon source and ammonium phosphate as the sole nitrogen source. Microorganisms capable of metabolizing citrate produce alkaline byproducts that increase the pH of the medium, causing the pH indicator bromothymol blue to change from green to blue. This color change indicates a positive citrate utilization reaction. Simmons Citrate Agar is commonly used in the IMViC test series to differentiate Enterobacteriaceae species.
