The pH indicator phenol red changes color in response to acid production, while the iron salt reacts with hydrogen sulfide to form a black precipitate. The slant/butt reaction helps determine whether bacteria ferment sugars and produce gas or hydrogen sulfide. This medium is widely used in diagnostic microbiology to differentiate between pathogens based on metabolic activity.
