Concanavalin A (Con A) is one of the most widely used and well characterized lectins. Con A has broad applicability primarily because it recognizes a commonly occurring sugar structure, a-linked mannose. Agarose Bound Con A is prepared using affinity-purified lectins and heat stable, cross-linked 4% agarose beads. The attachment of the lectins to the beads through a hydrophilic spacer arm is carefully controlled to preserve lectin activity and minimize conformational changes of the bound lectins. The recommended inhibiting/eluting sugar is a mixture of 200 mM a-methylmannoside/200 mM a-methylglucoside.
