Selectively activate retinoic acid receptor alpha (RARα) compared to RARβ and RARγ with AM580 (Bernard et al. Biochem Biophys Res Commun, 1992). Used to reprogram somatic cells to induced pluripotent stem cells (Wang et al. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA, 2011), this retinoid pathway activator also inhibits tumor growth in MMTV-Myc mice (Bosch et al. Breast Cancer Res, 2012); induces differentiation in acute promyelocytic leukemia cells (Gianní et al. Blood, 1996); and inhibits mouse mammary tumor virus (MMTV)-neu- and MMTV-wnt1-induced mammary gland hyperplasia (Lu et al. Oncogene, 2010). AM580 is also used to induce differentiation of human induced pluripotent stem cells into intermediate mesoderm, in combination with the CHIR99021 (Araoka et al. PLoS One, 2014).
