This gene encodes a tumor suppressor protein that functions as a phosphatidylinositol-3,4,5-trisphosphate 3-phosphatase. It contains a tensin-like domain and a catalytic domain similar to dual specificity protein tyrosine phosphatases, but specifically dephosphorylates phosphoinositides. By regulating phosphatidylinositol-3,4,5-trisphosphate levels, it negatively controls the AKT/PKB signaling pathway. A non-canonical upstream initiation site produces a longer isoform associated with the mitochondrial inner membrane, potentially involved in energy metabolism regulation. A pseudogene of this gene is located on chromosome 9. Alternative splicing and multiple translation start sites result in various isoforms.
