This gene encodes a transcription factor from the leucine zipper family, which binds to the cAMP-responsive element (CRE) and stimulates CRE-dependent transcription. The protein functions as a histone acetyltransferase (HAT), acetylating histones H2B and H4, thus activating transcription by modifying chromatin. It also plays a role in the DNA damage response, independent of transcriptional regulation. The protein has DNA-binding transcription repressor activity, RNA polymerase II-specific activity, and binds to transcription coactivators. It negatively and positively regulates RNA polymerase II-dependent transcription. The protein is located in the nucleoplasm and is a biomarker for colorectal cancer. Several alternatively spliced transcript variants have been identified for this gene.
