Ascorbic acid 6-palmitate has antioxidant and antiproliferative activities. It scavenges hydroxyl radicals in cell-free assays and inhibits lipid peroxidation. It has been shown that despite its antioxidant properties, ascorbic acid 6-palmitate promotes LPO, JNK activation and cytotoxicity following UVB irradiation. Ascorbic acid 6-palmitate effectively inhibited anthrax cytotoxic protease and blocks proteolytic activities of host furin, cathepsin B and caspases that mediate toxins lethality in cells.
