A sesquiterpene with diverse biological activities; scavenges DPPH radicals in a cell-free assay at 0.01, 0.1, or 1 mg/ml; antagonist of dopamine D2 receptors (IC50 = 2.5 µM); inhibitor of 5-LO; (IC50 = 25.1 µM); inhibits tert-butyl hydroperoxide-induced release of ALT and LDH and increases in intracellular MDA and DNA damage in primary rat hepatocytes; induces apoptosis and disrupts the mitochondrial membrane potential in HepG2 and MHCC97H cells at 5, 10, or 20 µM; inhibits migration and invasion, decreases the levels of α-SMA, vimentin, N-cadherin, MMP-2, MMP-9, and increases E-cadherin and TIMP-2 in the same cells; decreases tumor volume and weight in a HepG2 mouse xenograft model at 5 or 10 mg/kg per day; increases the number of striatal dopamine receptor-positive neurons and decreases gait impairment in a mouse model of MPTP-induced Parkinson's disease
