Bacteroides Bile Esculin (BBE) agar is an enriched, selective, & differential Med. used for the isolation & presumptive ID of obligately anaerobic gram-negative bacilli of the Bacteroides fragilis group & Bilophila wadsworthia. This media is prepared, stored, & dispensed under oxygen-free conditions to prevent the formation of oxidized products prior to use. This Med. is also available in a 1-plate package or packaged w/ other media types in a single convenience pack.BBE agar contains casein, soy peptones, hemin, & vitamin K as the nutritive base. Selective agents include gentamicin to inhibit facultative anaerobes & bile to inhibit most anaerobes other than the B. fragilis group. Esculin & ferric ammonium citrate permits the recognition of esculin hydrolysis through a brown to black coloration around the esculin-positive colonies. Bilophila spp. may produce black-centered colonies from hydrogen sulfide production.
