Betaxolol hydrochloride is a selective beta1 adrenergic receptor blocker used in research for hypertension and glaucoma. It is a cardioselective beta-adrenergic receptor blocking agent. Studies have shown that it can diminish anxiety-like behavior during early withdrawal from chronic cocaine administration in rats. It may also be safer for patients with reactive airway disease compared to timolol or levobunolol due to less systemic beta 2- and possibly beta 1-adrenergic receptor blockade.
