Perform simple screening tests to differentiate Bacteroides fragilis group from other Bacteroides species and identify other anaerobic bacteria with this ready-to-use, reagent-impregnated disk.

Differentiate Bacteroides fragilis group from other Bacteroides species and identify other anaerobic bacteria with Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Bile Disk.

Yamazaki et al. replaced the bile tube1 that was used earlier to differentiate Bacteroides fragilis group from other Bacteroides species. They used 25 mg bile-impregnated filter paper disk. In 1983, Weinberg et al reported comparable results with a 15 mg bile disk that helped to clearly separate bile-resistant and bile-sensitive anaerobes2.

Bacteroides fragilis is an anaerobic Gram-negative bacillus most frequently recovered from human infections. Bile-resistant organisms can grow in the presence of bile and present a resistant growth pattern around the disk whereas bile-sensitive organisms exhibit a zone of inhibition around the Bile Disk. This phenomenon can be used to differentiate B.fragilis from other Bacteroides spp and to aid in identification of other anaerobic bacteria. B. fragilis is the only commonly encountered anaerobic Gram-negative bacillus that is not inhibited by bile.3

  • Ready to use: Reagent-impregnated disk. No additional preparation required.
  • Easy interpretation:
    • Sensitive: An inhibitory zone around the bile disk.
    • Resistant: Growth pattern up to the disk.

Bile Disk contains reactive ingredient oxgall (15.0 mg/mL).
