Produced from a sterile preparation of placental glucoprotein urine of pregnant women. Total MW of 36,700 Dalton. Consists of 237 amino acids, a chain-92 a.a. and b chain-145 a.a. Sterile filtered white powder, lyophilized w/ no additives. hCG is a peptide hormone used in superovulation techniques to increase the number of ovulated oocytes in lab animals. Mice are typically injected with PMSG to stimulate follicle growth and later injected with hCG to induce ovulation. hCG is made by the embryo soon after conception and later by the syncytiotrophoblast. hCG prevents the disintegration of the corpus luteum and thereby maintains progesterone production, critical for human pregnancy. hCG may affect immune tolerance of the pregnancy. Early pregnancy testing is usually based on hCG detection/measurement.
