Blasticidin S HCL is an antibiotic that demonstrates a strong inhibitory effect on protein synthesis in eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells. Blasticidin causes tRNA to bond more strongly to the P site of the large ribosomal subunit while simultaneously deforming the tRNA, thus inhibiting proper translation. The ultimate result of this process is a significant suppression of the hydrolysis of peptidyl-tRNA along with inhibition of peptide bond formation.
