Bordet Gengou Agar with 15% Sheep Blood is a highly enriched medium developed for the isolation and identification of Bordetella pertussis and Bordetella parapertussis. Each sterile 100 × 15 mm plate contains 20 mL of potato infusion agar supplemented with glycerol and 15% defibrinated sheep blood. The potato infusion provides essential nutrients while starch components absorb inhibitory fatty acids that could hinder growth. This formulation supports the recovery of fastidious Bordetella organisms from respiratory specimens. Colonies typically appear smooth, convex, and glistening with a characteristic “mercury drop” appearance. The high blood concentration supplies additional growth factors and allows observation of colony morphology. This medium is widely used in clinical microbiology laboratories for diagnosing whooping cough infections.
