BPU17 binds to PHB1, causing mild defects in mitochondrial function through impaired PHB1-PHB2 interaction. This inhibits SRF/CArG-box-dependent transcription, suppressing the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of retinal pigment epithelial cells (RPEs). BPU17 also shows antifibrotic activity in vivo and is promising for research into anti-neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) agents.
