Brain Heart Infusion (BHI) Agar is a highly nutritious general purpose culture medium used for the cultivation of a wide variety of microorganisms. Each sterile 100 × 15 mm plate contains 20 mL of agar derived from infusions of bovine and porcine brain and heart tissues combined with peptones and nutrients that provide abundant nitrogen, vitamins, and carbon sources. This rich formulation supports the growth of fastidious bacteria, pathogenic fungi, and yeasts that may not grow on less enriched media. BHI agar is commonly used in clinical, research, and industrial laboratories for isolation and maintenance of organisms such as Streptococcus, Pneumococcus, and Neisseria species. Its buffering capacity maintains stable pH conditions, allowing heavy microbial growth while preserving reliable colony morphology for identification and study.
