Brilliant Green Bile Broth 2% with Durham Tube is a selective liquid medium used for the detection of coliform bacteria in water, dairy products, and food samples as part of confirmatory microbiological testing procedures. The formulation contains brilliant green dye and bile salts that inhibit Gram positive bacteria and many non coliform organisms while allowing bile tolerant coliforms such as Escherichia coli to grow. Each culture tube contains approximately 10mL of broth and includes an inverted Durham tube that captures gas produced during lactose fermentation. Gas formation inside the Durham tube after incubation provides visual confirmation of coliform presence. This medium is widely used in regulatory and quality testing programs, including USP, FDA, and Standard Methods protocols for water, food, and environmental microbiology.
