Bronopol is an antibacterial agent effective against Gram-negative bacteria. It functions by oxidizing protein thiols, inhibiting enzymatic activity, and acting as a formaldehyde releaser. In vitro, it activates THP-1 cells, increases CD86 expression, induces IL-8 secretion, and promotes early expression of HMOX1 and HSPA6 genes. In vivo, it can induce chemical peritonitis and transitory pain aggressive behavior in Sprague-Dawley rat models.
