Buffered Peptone Water (BPW) is a non selective pre enrichment broth widely used in food safety and environmental microbiology for the recovery of Salmonella species and other Enterobacteriaceae. Each bottle contains 100 mL of nutrient broth composed of enzymatic digest of casein, sodium chloride, and a phosphate buffering system that maintains a stable pH during incubation. The formulation provides a gentle environment that allows stressed or sub lethally injured bacteria to repair and multiply before transfer to selective enrichment media. This step is essential in testing protocols such as ISO 6579 and FDA BAM methods, where direct plating onto selective media may suppress damaged pathogens. BPW improves detection sensitivity and supports accurate microbiological analysis of food and environmental samples.
