Inhibit nuclear factor (NF)-κB and prevent phosphorylation and degradation of TNF-dependent IκBα with Butein (Yang et al. Biochem Biophys Res Commun, 1998; Pandey et al. J Biol Chem, 2007; Orlikova et al. Oncol Rep, 2012). This plant polyphenol is used in cancer research to inhibit various processes, such as the TNF-α-induced invasion of human lung adenocarcinoma H1299 cells (Pandey et al. J Biol Chem, 2007); growth in human hepatoma cancer cell lines HepG2 and Hep3B (Moon et al. Cancer Lett, 2010); and testosterone-induced proliferation in breast cancer cells (Wang et al. Life Sci, 2005). Butein also exhibits anti-inflammatory properties in a mouse macrophage cell line by inhibiting LPS-induced expression of iNOS (Lee et al. Biochem Biophys Res Commun, 2004).
