Butterfield’s Phosphate Buffer is a sterile buffered diluent used for preparing and serially diluting microbiological samples from food, dairy, water, and pharmaceutical products. Each bottle contains 99 mL of buffered water formulated with monobasic potassium phosphate and adjusted to a neutral pH of 7.2 ± 0.2. The buffering system protects microorganisms from osmotic shock and pH fluctuations that can occur during dilution with plain water. This ensures that viable cells remain stable until plating and enumeration. The 99 mL fill volume allows technicians to easily prepare a precise 1:100 dilution by adding 1 mL of sample. Butterfield’s Phosphate Buffer is widely used in microbial enumeration procedures such as aerobic plate counts and yeast and mold analysis.
