The localization of CD31 to regions of cell-cell contacts, and the sequencesimilarity to CEA, a known intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM),strongly suggests that CD31 may function as an ICAM, possiblymediating endothelial cell-cell contacts and also promoting interactionsbetween leukocytes and endothelial cells. Anti-CD31 monoclonalantibody JC/70A reacts with a membrane glycoprotein with an apparentsize of 100 kD in endothelial cells and 130 kD in platelets. It stronglystains endothelium in normal tissue as well as benign and malignant tumortissue. The antibody labels mega-karyocytes, platelets and occasionallyplasma cells, and weakly stains mantle zone B cells, peripheral T cells andneutrophils.
