Cooked Meat Medium is an enrichment and maintenance medium widely used for cultivating aerobic, microaerophilic, and anaerobic microorganisms. Each tube contains 10mL of nutrient broth along with sterilized beef heart tissue particles that provide essential amino acids and growth factors. The meat particles also contain naturally occurring reducing compounds that lower the oxidation reduction potential within the lower portion of the tube, creating an environment favorable for anaerobic organisms. This dual function supports the recovery and growth of organisms such as Clostridium and Bacteroides from small inocula. Aerobic organisms tend to grow near the top where oxygen is present, while strict anaerobes develop near the meat particles. The medium is commonly used in clinical microbiology laboratories for cultivation, transport, and maintenance of sensitive bacterial cultures.
