Used to perform the dimethyl sulfoxide acid-fast staining procedure.  Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is a wetting agent with tremendous penetrating qualities.  When DMSO is mixed with carbol fuchsin, the stain rapidly penetrates cell walls, eliminating the need to heat the slide.  A mild acetic acid is added to the malachite green counterstain combining the decolorization and counterstain steps into one
