Cycloheximide is a fungal-derived compound used particularly in molecular biology, microbiology, and cell biology. It inhibits protein synthesis in eukaryotic cells by interfering with the translocation step during protein elongation on the ribosome. It binds to the 60S ribosomal subunit and prevents the movement of peptidyl-tRNA from the A-site to the P-site, inhibiting the synthesis of new polypeptide chains.
