This gene encodes a cytochrome P450 enzyme, part of the monooxygenase family involved in drug metabolism and the synthesis of cholesterol, steroids, and lipids. It is located in the endoplasmic reticulum and metabolizes about 25% of commonly prescribed drugs, including antidepressants, antipsychotics, analgesics, and antiemetics. The gene is highly polymorphic, with certain alleles leading to the poor metabolizer phenotype, characterized by reduced drug metabolism. Some individuals may lack functional protein due to two null alleles, while others may have no gene copies. Individuals with the ultrarapid metabolizer phenotype may have 3 or more active gene copies. Alternative splicing of this gene results in various isoforms.
